Subterranean Termite Biology

Termites are insects of the order Isoptera. With the aid of microscopic bacteria that live in their digestive systems, termites are the only insects capable of digesting the cellulose in wood. The termites found in Indiana are subterranean termites, so named because they live in the soil. Subterranean termite workers forage through the soil in search of wood to eat, which in nature would consist primarily of dead tree stumps and fallen limbs. This foraging serves an important purpose in nature: Termites help return the nutrients in dead trees to the soil, where it can nourish new life.

Unfortunately, as far as a termite is concerned, an unprotected home is just another dead tree. When, in the course of their foraging, termites come across an unprotected wooden home, barn, shed, or other wooden building, they quickly return to the nest to tell the rest of their buddies using a complex system of chemical messengers called pheromones. Before long, hundreds or thousands of worker termites will be assigned to begin eating your home, building shelter tubes to get between the soil and the wood, if necessary.
